Middlemarch

Middlemarch (Penguin Classics) Middlemarch by George Eliot

This was the first book I have listened to from Libirvox.org (http://librivox.org/). I really enjoyed the story and must admit if I had picked up the printed version, I probably would not have finished it as I might have found it a little dry. Although, the various readers of the book made the very interesting, each having different voices for the separate characters. If you have not yet tried Libirvox to listen to audio books for free, I would recommend it, as I would recommend Middlemarch (http://librivox.org/middlemarch-by-george-eliot/) for those looking for an insight into a small town filled with wondrous characters and scandals. Elliot did a great job making the characters come to life. However, there are a lot of them and I found this character map very helpful (http://www.librarything.com/topic/36215).

Samantha in January

Here are some pictures of what Samantha did this month thus far.  She has been very active and of course everyone wants to hang out with Samantha.  Daddy also put together a high chair, which took him much longer than he thought it would.

Here is Paul with Samantha, I’m not sure which one of them is more relaxed in this picture.

Samantha is carnivorous in this photo.  Don’t eat Tigger Samantha!

Here is Daddy trying to put together her new high chair.  “What the…?”

And here is the finished product…

Here is one with Aunt Lauren, when she hung out with us early in the month.

Big girl sitting in the couch.  Very happy with herself.

Samantha is just ecstatic to be rocking with her Aunt Lauren.

And finally here is Grandma Lyn taking care of Samantha today, to give Grandmama Grace a break.

Honey Comb Cereal Makes Me Sick

And may be giving me cancer….

Last night after dinner I was still hungry so I had a small bowl of cereal.  Honey Comb cereal was readily available in the cupboard, so I grabbed it and had a little snack.  I felt just fine until about 1am this morning.  The my stomach woke me up to let me know there was an emergency evacuation going on!

Could it have been something else that made me sick?  Maybe, but I don’t think so, I ate the foods that I usually do every day.  No changes, nothing new except for the honey comb cereal.  Turns out my brother-in-law had some of that same box a week ago and was very ill as well.  Could have been just that box, but I’m not going to buy it anymore.  And not just because it made me sick, but because of what I found in it.

I was not too surprised that something called honey comb is made up of almost all corn flour, as most cereals are all corn.  What did confuse me was the last thing on the ingredients list.  BHT.  What is BHT?  Being the nerd that I am I looked it up on wikipedia.  Besides being a food preservative BHT or Butylated hydroxytoluene is also used in:

cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, jet fuels, rubber, petroleum products, electrical transformer oil, and embalming fluid.

WHAT?!?! Embalming fluid!?!?  You have got to be kidding me.  I ate that stuff!  Oh and it gets better…

In the 1970s, Benjamin Feingold, a San Francisco MD …claimed that BHT could produce hyperactivity in some children. In addition, some controversy surrounds the link of BHT to cancer risk

Lovely!

Sounds of Samantha!

Miss Samantha?  Well now you can listen to her wherever you are!  Just a few minutes for this post.  As it takes a long time to put together and wordpress only lets me upload 2MB and I don’t want to do it myself.

The Sounds of Christmas

One of my gifts for Christmas was the H2 Handy Recorder.  So I recorded a bit of what was going on.  Here it is.

A good book, but doesn’t compare to the harry potter series. A quick read.

The best book in the series. One of my all time favorite books I have ever read. I would not recommend reading this one out of order. Looking forward to seeing the movie for this one! J.K. Rowling may not write anymore books in this series, but I think others might pick up where she left off.
