The way these types of photos are taken is called High Dynamic Range (HDR). I’ve been meaning to try getting some shots in this way. Basically it’s setting auto bracketing on your camera and taking multiple differently exposed shots of the same thing. Then it takes software to merge the different images together to make the shot you see in photos like the one above.
